A batteau is a long, narrow, flat-bottomed wooden boat propelled by crewmen using poles. These boats were widely used throughout the 19th century to carry passengers and cargo across the nation’s rivers. Batteaux were considered the "18-wheelers" of their day but disappeared from the rivers more than a century ago with the development of the railroad, until now. Three Rivers Outfitters operates the only commercial batteau in the country. The batteau is a great way to enjoy the river - especially for those who can not use a canoe.
